Fun Fourth Facts!

This week, we’re taking a break from our water conservation series to bring you some fun facts about the 4th of July.  What are some of the ways that you celebrate this fun summer holiday?  For me, I can remember every 4th of July, we would go park at the mall and watch the fireworks go off….and get eaten by the mosquitos.  You couldn’t have a 4th of July celebration without the little blood suckers!   Do you celebrate by cooking out each year?  If so, you’re not alone.  It’s estimated that Americans will eat 150 million hot dogs by the time the 4th of July is said and done.  I wonder how many of those are done during one of those all you can eat contests????  Read on for more fun filled 4th of July facts:

  • How many people lived in the US when the declaration was signed in July, 1776?  Glad you asked!  In July, 1776, there were approximately 2.5 million people living in the U.S.  Let’s put this into perspective – in 1776, there were as many people living in the US as there was living in Chicago in 2016.

  • Do you attend 4th of July parades?  If so, you may want to check out the oldest parade in U.S. History which is held each year in Bristol, RI.  This parade has been going on since 1785 making it 233 years old this year!

  • Remember I mentioned that 150M hot dogs will be consumed on the 4th?  Well, it’s estimated that 62% of Americans will attend a picnic on the 4th of July while an estimated $6.9B will be spent on food for the 4th of July!

  • How many fireworks displays do you think occur in the U.S. during the 4th of July holiday?  Would it surprise you if I told you that there are 16K fireworks displays nationwide each 4th of July?  If that doesn’t blow your mind, how about this – it’s estimated that the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular costs approximately $6M!  Taking Macy’s 4th of July display further, it’s believed that 3M people will watch the display from the Hudson River and 15M will watch on TV.  Additionally, approximately 5K police officers were assigned to the display in 2017 which broke a record!
